partner ABX motion for bootstrapped agency

Key Result:

U.S.-based web/mobile dev agency procured a single, multi-year contract with a Fortune 50 org through a design partner

TLDR:

Low-cost, international, offshore firms shrink the market for U.S.-based web and mobile development agencies daily. This agency sought a more permanent solution than balancing client loads with internal resources.

After consulting with all stakeholders, Ceruleo prescribed a shift a targeted ABX motion that resulted in 81 meetings across design partners, consultancies, and potential clients.

Ultimately, this achieved the team’s singular expressed goal: a single, multi-year contract with a Fortune 50 org through a design partner

The Nitty Gritty:

Bespoke, U.S.-based web and mobile development agencies are having their market potential shrink every day. International entrants and new tools that empower internal development tools to quickly spin up applications provide constant threats to

When hired, Ceruleo audited all stakeholders at the agency. It became apparent that their goal was to have a single contract that the entire internal team could collaborate on. Additionally, every one of their previous contracts came through a digital design partner, and the working theory was that design agencies have a much fuller sales pipeline and partnership portfolio.

As their current contract had less than a year remaining, getting the ABX in motion was imperative.

We quickly focused on local and regional design firms with enterprise clients. Ideally these firms would have limited (or no) internal developer resources. The account list was built and prioritized and outreach began.

In the background, there were two pressing marketing needs:  the website needed replatformed along with a huge narrative shift, and the online reputation management was non-existent.

The pedal hit the metal on the new website. The narrative shifted away from technical jargon to a focus on partnership, design implementation, and headless web application development (so meta with React/Drupal platform the new website was built on). Additionally, previous clients were contacted to post reviews on reputation management sites like Clutch, Agency Spotter, and GoodFirms.

Sequenced outreach resulted in a spike in qualified web traffic. Ultimately, 81 meetings (affectionately referred to as “busy coffees” by the agency team) across design partners, consultancies, and potential clients. When one of our design partners brought us a project for a Fortune 50 client of theirs, the entire team knew we were the perfect fit for it. The project quickly kicked off (at a 27% hourly rate increase over any previous project) and the team was able to collaborate and sustain themselves for years to come.
